First STS-120 Spacewalk in the Can
Written on October 26, 2007 by Apogee
The first of five spacewalks planned for the current space shuttle mission is complete. Astronauts Scott Parazynski and Doug Wheelock spent a little more than six hours outside the docked International Space Station/Space Shuttle Discovery complex on Friday.
During their excursion, Parazynski and Wheelock removed a broken antenna from the station and disconnected power cables between two trusses. They also moved into Discovery’s payload bay to prepare the Harmony module for installation on the station.
When the spacewalkers finished prepping Harmony, their fellow crewmembers used the shuttle and station robotic arms to maneuver the new module to a temporary docking position on the station. After Discovery leaves, the station crew will move Harmony to its permanent location, where it will become the connecting node for Japanese and European laboratories.
